When I entered the room, I spotted Evelyn looking out the window. I waited for her to notice me, but she didn’t immediately, lost somewhere between her mind and what was on the other side of the window.

I had only met with Evelyn a handful of times, yet something about her felt like I’d known her for years. I felt comfortable sharing with her. Perhaps it was the fact she was a therapist, and she was skilled at disarming people. Something told me that wasn’t it, though. She seemed vulnerable when I spoke to her. I wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not.

Anxiety had surfaced inside me that I might have been putting this woman in danger. I’d played a role in Alison’s death, and I would have to live with that, but was I putting Evelyn in the same danger? I’d seen what Nathan was capable of. What would he do if he felt betrayed by Evelyn? My fears didn’t change that she was the only one close enough to Nathan to find the evidence to free me.

“Is everything all right?” I asked as I approached.

Her head jerked as if I had pulled her out of a trance. Her eyes widened when she looked at me, and she smiled as she returned to reality. Something felt different about her today. She’d been so calm and collected in all our previous meetings. This Evelyn felt disheveled. She kept looking around her as if she were worried someone was watching her. “Sorry, I’m a bit out of it today,” she offered with nervous laughter.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” I asked again as I took a seat.

“I said everything’s fine.” She raised her voice slightly before correcting herself. “Don’t be silly.”

Something was different. Something had her rattled. I wondered if it was Nathan. Were my fears valid? Was he starting to figure out what she was up to?

“What happened after you followed him to the restaurant?” she asked, not allowing me the opportunity to probe further.

“What?”

“Last week, you were talking about how you followed him to the restaurant. You said you got him back. What did you mean by that?” The conversation came flooding back. I saw Evelyn’s hand trembling. It looked as though she might jump out of her skin.

“What is going on with you?”

She shook her head, and when she did, I noticed the dark circles under her eyes. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“You look like you haven’t slept in days,” I stated.

She forced a brief smile before she dismissed my suggestion. “I told you, I’m fine. I had an emergency call from a client last night and then had too much coffee to compensate this morning.” She waved a hand in my direction as if she were physically waving off the concern. “The last time I was here, you said that you had gotten Nathan back. What did you mean by that?”

I hesitated before deciding to continue with my story. “Well, I guess I should go back to the day I’d spotted him at the restaurant that first time.
